Module 6, Lesson 2: How to Write a Job Description

There's nothing exciting about job descriptions! 😁 But they play a vital role in ensuring clarity and alignment within an organization. During this lesson, Kris will guide you through the process of writing a job description, emphasizing that a role should not be limited to generic labels but tailored to the unique needs of your team.

Here's what she'll cover:

1️⃣ Clarity is King: It all starts with clearly identifying the specific role or position you need. Reflect on the purpose and responsibilities of the role, and understand the daily, weekly, and monthly tasks involved. List the key responsibilities categorically, and consider adding additional categories for quarterly, semiannual, or annual tasks.

2️⃣ Start with the Desired Outcome: When creating a new position, think deeply about what result you hope to achieve. What specific outcome will adding this role bring to your business? Avoid trying to include too many things in the job description. Keep it clean, simple, and aligned with your desired outcome.

3️⃣ Focus on Results: Remember, hiring is not just about finding someone to do work, but about ensuring they can deliver results. Define your key result at the top of the job description, and identify three to five key objectives as measures of achieving that result.

Because there was a Reflective Guide in Module 4 that helped you think through the main components of the job description, we are providing a Do Sheet (found in the Download section of this module) that you can use to work through the key elements of a job description for a position that you want to fill while Kris is teaching this lesson. There are also several examples of job descriptions provided in the Download section of this lesson. We have provided Word documents of each example, as well, so that you can tweak them and make them your own if you need them.
