Module 10, Lesson 2: Mistakes, Feedback, and Growth - Navigating the Challenges of Delegating Work
So you've moved from delegation to ownership, but the team member still doesn't deliver. In this lesson, Kris specifically addresses what to do when someone doesn't meet deadlines, makes mistakes, or doesn't produce the work as expected. As a leader, it can be tempting to just take over and do it ourselves, but this approach can create a cycle of not holding others accountable and perpetuating subpar work.
The key issues addressed are:
1️⃣ Holding people to account: When team members fail to meet deadlines or make mistakes, it's natural to want to step in and fix things ourselves. However, by doing this, we unintentionally enable them to continue delivering subpar work. It's crucial to address the issue directly, asking them what went wrong and holding them responsible for their commitments.
2️⃣ Providing feedback and support: To foster growth and improvement, it's important to offer constructive feedback to team members who fall short. Utilize tools like screen recordings with commentary or written feedback to communicate clearly and effectively. Remember, their job is to fix their own mistakes and learn from them. Avoid double-paying by not outsourcing their responsibilities.
3️⃣ Developing critical thinking skills: If team members consistently veer off course or deliver results that don't align with your expectations, it's essential to recalibrate their understanding of the task or project. Rather than immediately reassigning or taking over, guide them through the thinking process and give them an opportunity to understand your perspective. By mentoring and supporting their critical thinking skills, you build a valuable asset for the business.
